UV umbrellas

So far, Most of us have used umbrellas only when rains were hailing from the sky, to safeguard yourself from getting wet. Besides, some of you also use it to stay away from harsh sunshine.

Using umbrellas, when its bright sunshine outdoors and there is no sunscreen, then it is very effective, researchers say.

According to a new study by Dermatologists at Emory University in Atlanta says – that little device (umbrella) could help shield skin from ultraviolet (UV) rays.

In the above study, the researchers found that any fully-functioning handheld umbrella can block more than three-quarters of UV light on a sunny day. Choose black umbrellas especially because, they seem to do the job well, by blocking at least 90 percent of rays.

Dr. Brundha Balaraman-Dermatology Researcher at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis says - "In addition to sunscreen, I often encourage people to engage in other sun-protection measures."

She further adds –“Along with using an umbrella, those other measures can include wearing wide-brimmed hats and sun-protective clothing. These are all great alternatives in situations where it may be impractical to apply sunscreen adequately… every one to two hours."

Dr. Suephy Chen and her colleagues did a further research to check whether the handheld umbrellas really block UV light.

In this research, 23 non fabric tears umbrellas were tested, on a sunny morning in April using a UV device, to measure radiation just under each umbrella's fabric and by the nose of the person using it. These numbers were compared to the umbrella-less radiation readings.

All but one of the umbrellas was a standard, handheld rain umbrella. The other was a travel sun umbrella.

Chen found that – the sun umbrella lived up to its billing, blocking more than 99 percent of UV rays. But devices originally intended to protect the user from rain worked well too, blocking at least 77 percent of UV light - and more among the darker-colored umbrellas.

Balaraman said golfers and people traveling to warm climates may especially benefit from carrying around a standard umbrella. But, she acknowledged, "It's a little challenging to convince people to use umbrellas on a daily basis.
